1931 DeForest Crosley Grandfather Clock Radio Model 850

In the early years of radio broadcasting, there was a brief and remarkable period when radio manufacturers attempted something far more ambitious than simply building electronic receivers. They sought to create objects of beauty — grand pieces of furniture that would symbolize modernity, prosperity, sophistication, and technological progress within the home.

Among the finest surviving examples of this artistic and industrial ambition is the 1931 DeForest Crosley Model 850 Grandmother Clock Radio.

Owner's Manual
This Radio comes with a Historical and Technical Manual where you can read about the history of this 1931 Clock Radio.

This radio was manufactured in Toronto Ontario. During the early 1930s by the DeForest Crosley Radio Corporation. Historical records indicate that the company had established vacuum tube and radio manufacturing operations in Toronto beginning in the early 1920s.

In April 1931, company president Major James E. Hahn reorganized the DeForest Crosley operation into a larger holding company called:  Consolidated Industries Limited. This explains why many 1931–1934 DeForest Crosley chassis like this one  carry the “Consolidated Industries Ltd.” imprint. The radio division itself continued to use the DeForest Crosley brand name publicly, but legally it became part of the larger holding corporation.

This manual also holds important technical information needed to maintain this valuable antique.
